Redesigning for Results: How Agile Furniture Transformed Learning at Pool Hayes Academy

Learning crowd research paper

A year-long study proves that learning spaces matter – and agile design is leading the change.

When it comes to improving educational outcomes, curriculum and pedagogy often steal the spotlight. But a recent research initiative led by The Learning Crowd, in collaboration with VS, Pool Hayes Academy, and Academy Transformation Trust, proves that furniture—yes, furniture—can be just as powerful.

The project set out to investigate the impact of agile furniture on student engagement, behaviour, and learning. Two Health & Social Care classrooms were studied over a year: one retained a traditional setup, the other was transformed using VS’s ergonomically-designed, mobile furniture.

The findings were clear and consistent:

  • Student engagement skyrocketed. Learners moved the furniture to suit their needs, embraced media boards for collaborative work, and even used the space during free periods.
  • Teacher strategies evolved. The flexible space enabled faster-paced, more interactive teaching. “Assessment is much quicker, teaching is much quicker,” said the lead teacher, Mary Robbins.
  • Behaviour improved. Students fidgeted less, focused more, and felt ownership of the space.

Quantitative data backed it all up—students in the agile space rated their experience significantly higher in comfort, concentration, and collaboration.

What’s next?
The Head Teacher at Pool Hayes has a clear answer: “I’d love to see it tried in more academic subjects… I would equip every room with VS furniture if I could.”

This study isn’t just a case study—it’s a call to action. If you’re rethinking your learning environments, now’s the time to be agile.
